Acupuncture to Boost Immunity - a case study
I get asked a lot about how acupuncture will help, so I thought Id walk through a typical case of one of my patients.
This particular patient that springs to mind, has had a history of repeated chest infections, lack of energy, poor sleep stress. Her breathing issues were serious enough to be affecting her life - both relating to missing work, and the lack of energy meant not being able to socialise with friends and family and not being able to keep up with walking and swimming.
As we went through the initial diagnosis, some issues relating to neck and chest tension leading to shallow breathing came up. Stress and tension here are big factors that massively affect a lot of people’s health without them realising it.
From the 5 element Chinese medicine point of view we understand that the lungs control respiration, the kidneys help deepen the breath and the liver smooths the flow of qi. In this case I could see Lung and Kidney Qi deficiency were causing shallow, tight breathing and Liver Qi Stagnation meant any stresses were causing extra tension. Bringing this three elements back into alignment was the key to allowing the body to regain and maintain health.
The initial course of treatment was 12 treatments over 10 weeks. The ongoing care is one treatment a month.
As well as the acupuncture treatments, acupressure, qigong and self massage exercises were prescribed.
As the treatment progressed, the patient felt the ability and motivation to start walking again - that of course has great impact on reducing stress and further progressing treatment. Throat and chest infections became rare and mild occurrences, and have not been an issue in the last year. The patient now takes stresses in her stride, enjoys an active, busy and fulfilling life - aided by her monthly tune up acupuncture treatment.
