Chronic Fatigue

Chronic Fatigue is a debilitating condition that has a massive impact on many people’s lives.

Brain fog, lack of energy and motivation, unable to get out of bed, needing to nap during the day which can be compounded by not being able to sleep at night are all symptoms of chronic fatigue.

In many cases, Chronic Fatigue is seen as a condition that has to be managed, or lived with as there is often no medical cause or cure.

And alarmingly, the numbers of people affected seems to still be on the rise with almost 1.5% of the population and twice as many women as men affected. I have been treating more people this year for Chronic Fatigue than ever before.

However, in the eyes of Acupuncturists, Chronic Fatigue is a symptom of an underlying imbalance within the body and can often be helped if not overcome with correct treatment. What’s more, Summer is the most energy abundant season making it a great time to get a pep back in the step.

The ebb and flow of Qi in the body is affected, as if a sea is no longer affected by the moon and has no tide. A course of acupuncture treatment helps re-establish the correct ebb and flow providing better energy during the day and restful sleep at night.

Most patients I see suffering with Chronic Fatigue arrive for their first appointment tired and feeling low.

I begin by explaining that acupuncture works on a cumulative basis – each treatment building on the last.  A course of treatment is required, the length of which is in a way determined by the length of time the Chronic Fatigue has been an issue and also by how the patients body responds to the treatments.

Next, the diagnosis process consists of a series of questions and talking through patient history, examination of the tongue and checking the pulse.

The treatment itself involves relaxing on a reclining chair or plinth and is an enjoyable, restorative experience.

With each progressive treatment, the transformation becomes more and more apparent. The eyes begin to brighten, energy increases, the slumped stature straightens and the gait becomes more assertive. The voice strengthens and mood improves.
